My time in Italy : Aperitivo

There is a tradition in Itay that I found out trying to meet a girl, ok, don't get any ideas. She is pretty I don't deny, but she friendzoned our entire group as soon as we met, no we didn't hit on her, that's how she introduced herself. "Enough of girl" I hear you say, but she introduced me to this awesome thing and how can I not write about the background? We shared the same workplace and that was the reason she came forward and spoke to us on our journey towards Florence, our chatty train journey stopped at Milan and we went our separate ways.

About three months pass and I go to Biella again (possibly for last time, thanks COVID). I have no reason to contact her, but if you are working for the same employer in a small town, chances are you cross paths, and we did so during the last week of my stay. She was unhappy that I didn't let her know I am in town, anyway invited me to a party scheduled for Friday night. But my flight was already scheduled to leave on Saturday morning so I said "I don't want to lose my sleep or be wasted on the flight and politely declined, hiding the fact that I don't know how to party. Thirty minutes pass by, ping, in chat again, invites me to aperitivo in Glamour. I'm like "what's that?"; she is like "oh, it is just that we hang out after work, warming up to dinner".

Theoretically aperitivo is meant to prepare your appetite for dinner with dry liquor, can you even imagine drinking an hour before dinner to prepare for dinner? that is a pure commitment to dinner! (remember? I did say Italians reserved a proper meal for lunch and dinner). Am I, teetotaller? I will neither confirm nor deny and you are going to have to look harder for clues.

And it was warming indeed, without hesitation we were discussing all things that could be considered sensitive to discuss, probably it was the calming breeze of 7pm or the relaxed atmosphere of everyone having a cup to sip under dim light. She is a Muslim from Palestine, of the lot she got picked apart first for being a Muslim woman and yet not covering her head and staying out with men who are not from her family. Then it was one among them from being handsome but still unlucky to get a lady love.

And the table turned on me because they don't know me personally they went for the general Indian stereotype of not eating beef or spreading hate. I'm from Tamil Nadu, here NOTA gets more vote than BJP, the party spreading hate. I had fun and felt superior pointing out we do eat beef, and it is a poor man's source of protein. I don't consume beef but they don't know that 😎 I neither lied, I kept saying Tamils eat beef, Tamils are tolerant towards religion, Tamils are wonderful! When I said an Italian priest translated the celebrated Thirukurral into Latin that attracted the attention of European scholar they were proud of themselves and delighted for the past shared history.

Coming back to Aperitivo, we had olives, chips, roasted nuts, taralli as sides for the drink. There is no standard set time for Aperitivo like happy hours, but one can equate those two to understand, but that is sort of oversimplification. Generally, I'd say 6 pm to 8pm, and dinner serving starts at 8pm, oh the fun of side, some do go overboard and will order bruschetta or even pizza to pair with the drink and understandably they'd usually end up not having any separate dinner. Take this with a pinch of salt as I'm no expert or a drinker, usual drink of choice is cocktail, wine or rarely beer. On average Aperitivo per person will cost €6 or €7, and the place we went to already had the sides, probably if you order additionally it will cost. Touristy spots are known to have higher prices for the view or simply to scam, there is nothing wrong in asking the host about the price, ask, but ask before getting seated down. Ok, I hope I have prepared you for dinner!

Puththu kovilum Putho tilesum, as they are built

Its the grand Aadi season here in Tamil Nadu wherever you go you'd be followed by awful noise from no mercy speakers masqueraded as a devotional song. Yes, this is the first post dedicated to it. Hindu is not a religion but it's idealism, a way to unite people, that's perfectly constructed by assuming separate task to every God, no single God worship. Hindus moved from nature worship to idol worship, but that doesn't mean that we don't have nature worship we have created an idol for them and continued to worship them in a different form. Snake is a beautiful reptile, I have made friend with few too... Our ancestor found the natural law, 'every living creature on earth is important for the ecosystem to be balanced'. Maybe to make sure snakes are not killed fearing their venom they made them as God too! Not just idol snakes, they are worshipped as they are at their  conquered (from rats and termite)   nest or  puthu . Puthu...

Up and Close with Sudalai Madan: The Encounter

Night of 13th April all the preparations for the rituals were done in the temple, Sudalaimadan swamy was decorated with flowers, fruits and coconuts; the dedications reached above his chest. My cousin Sudalai Muthu, senior priest of the shrine reached home by late-night got blessings of his father Late Shanmugam Sundaram also previous head priest and blessed the family members in room dedicated for God, then started towards the temple. People have already gathered in huge numbers and were waiting for the Sudalaimada Swamy's arrival at Temple. Different rituals were offered by people to the Lord in order to get the blessings. As it is believed Sudaimada Swamy, the son of Lord Siva used to consume meat in Kailash for this reason he is sent to earth, where he can satisfy his earthy hunger thereby not polluting Kailash. Sree Aaladi Padmanabha Sudalaimada Swamy Temple, Kumarapuram Offering meat to Sudalaimadan is the most important and watchful event of the festival. Many devotees off...

Up and Close with Sudalai Madan: Warm up

Hollywood is just a movie industry for most people, but for some like me, it is the inspiration and life guide. I have watched many movies from all genres - action, thriller, comedy, drama, romance, but what I loved is a controversial subjects.  Mikael Håfström's 1408 was in my mind, when I travelled down south to my native for the holy annual festival, 'Sudalaimada Swamy Kodai'. I always keep track of what I do at what time when I'm away from home in my diary. I caught this habit after maintaining the track diary when we make the pilgrimage to Sabarimala every year. Back view of our Sudalaimada Swamy temple I travelled with Athai and Chitapa to Thirunelveli by train; festival takes place at summer, to keep his elder sister comfortable my uncle booked an AC room near Nellai railway junction we stopped by dropped luggage and refreshed. I was happy he was there, someone who can guess what will be running in my mind. We reached Kumarapuram after going to Udhayathur so...

why do people sweat more in chennai???

One of the famous ornament of chennai is its summer!. Everyone here would have at least once talked about its effect and the way they affected. People comes out with sweats flowing from the body is the usual scene of chennai noon. The sweat produced is not just due to the temperature of the region. It is in fact due to the high humidity of chennai. To explain this lets see a fact, people in chennai sweats more than the people in delhi where the temperature is higher than the former. This is because of chennai's location. Chennai is located near sea due to which sea water evaporation is high during summer which in turn increases the humidity (Amount of water vapour present in air). Normally human blood temperature is about 35 deg Celsius. If the outside temperature is more than that, then our system tries to automatically cools down by releasing sweat from the body. The sweat which is released cools the surrounding heat by converting into vapour thereby reducing the body te...

Acid rain in Chennai

Don't panic it is not literal acid but a metaphorical one. Probably Poes Garden, maybe Gopalapuram I can't imagine any other area in Chennai to be drained. So why is this? every time? we pray for rain and when it comes we are always unprepared, even for moderate showers our roads are flooded. Is it because Chennai is an old city and its infrastructure not enough for information age or is that because of the vote bank politics? By now you'd have guessed what I quoted as 'Acid rain', it is that one created by the broadcasting network. Nowadays every political party is having its own network, you do the math and imagine the amount of 'Angel and Demon' perspective we are exposed to. From every network that is with the ruling party, we are shown the 'Angel face' emergency number, disaster recovery team, ambulance gushing thru flood, evacuation and so on. Other side which clearly outnumbers the ruling party in 4:1 ratio shows us flood, death, dengue, sew...
