Product of Govt. aided School, but does it matter?

I started my work life in an MNC, Tier 1 IT service provider. I worked with clients directly since I was able to understand and speak their 'accent'. My second employer is an Italian bank where both my Indian and Italian colleagues praised my spoken, never mind that I almost always fail to communicate. It is funny that I picked up the accent from American sitcoms and cartoons and didn't undergo any sort of training.  I can hear you say "stop this nonsense bragging blog", I will after I manage to sell you the idea 'schooling is important, but schools or education boards are not'.  But why now? why not 2011? when I got the job and the girl? Probably that is the highest point in my life why was not be boastful then! why now? - Again I'm not boasting I'm only trying to convince myself and you, of course. This idea had its inception long back, 2007 was my first year of college I was considered to have a fairly high standard of communication skill in c...

Practice empathy no matter the communication style

I am a straight talker, I proudly wear it on my shoulder. I like it when people can trust my words and identifies me as a person who "talk the talk, walk the walk". A year ago someone in my workplace told me that I should work on being diplomatic since direct communication might hurt relationships. As much as I'd like to argue that I'm not looking for long term friendship in office and I'm here to complete my task, as I level up in the ladder, my vantage point changes and so does my perspective about the workplace communication. Now I find myself in a place where I have to communicate more, about the same thing to multiple stakeholders with different level of business and technical knowledge. It is getting increasingly difficult to continue being 'the straight talker', which I regarded highly in the past. Sometimes it is not just about knowledge of the audience, it is more about the style of communication. I'm Indian, and my domicile has not changed si...

Let's (try to) define work load-pressure-stress

Workload, work pressure, workplace stress might sound similar and people use them interchangeably, but I'm here to argue that it should not be done.  TL;DR  usually more workload leads to work pressure, high work pressure leads to workplace stress, and chronic stress creates a relationship and even health problems. The workload is the only neutral word here, what is 'neutral' about it? Unless you explicit qualify it like "I have high workload" or "I am getting so much free time these days since my  workload has been reduced "; you can't tell for sure if it demands increased effort from the employee.  Let's discuss work pressure; a short burst of high workload, work that is out of your comfort zone, or time-bound steep targets - all defines work pressure. If it is rare and rewarding it tends to put the career on fast-track, and this is what we usually hear from talent managers. Often work pressure is continuous and the deadline is almost a...

Three language educational policy will only benefit Hindi

The three language education policy even if not enforcing Hindi, will end up enabling and propagating only Hindi! Since I'm from Tamilnadu, I'll restrict my views to it; but you can pick this template and apply to any state/UT of India. Students cannot learn on their own, this would mean hiring new teachers. But Schools cannot afford to hire many teachers due to budget, that cascades to lean number of choices available for student. German/French/Japan or any such international language teachers will be highly sought after by lavish private schools which translates to high salary for them, naturally schools catering to middle class will not be able to afford them. Thus school administration will end up hiring Hindi teachers readily available from Dhakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha. Maybe some schools present in borders towns like Vellor, Hosur, Nagapattinam will choose Telugu, Kannadam, Malayalam and so on. Baring them I can only see Hindi flourishing in future. I...

October rambling

Straight enough* Hockey It is true that Hockey was never India's national sport, or that India never had a national sport. But to abandon a sport which brought such glory to us in past is but a sin. I don't remember last time I saw any NEWS media, print or digital airing the success story of India in Newzealand as much as random guy with mic yelling at MS Dhoni! Do you realize the amount of negativity the media is dumping on us these days, wish I can go back to DD era. If not cricket the Bollywood and money plays us around ISL! Goddamn! one guy wanted to know who plays quarter-back for Chennai !meh! Yes Google results are polarized, you should probably search for soccer and learn the position :@ Why would you even want to? you are fat and fag get back to photo-editor and update it in all networks Sleepless Nights Yes I know Dr. Kamala Hasan is making a Tamil movie based on the Sleepless Nights of Hollywood, but no I was not talking about it. Its our lovely prince,...

A fitting Farewell

Dr. Kalam, the ever celebrate teacher of goodness passed away while doing what he does best. The best farewell that State governments across India came with was a holiday! Of course we do this to that man who reportedly said 'you have to work twice when I died'. Surprisingly the foreign-based organization that I work for stuck to Dr. Kalam's instruction, you  might think they are dedicate to money and this quote is just reason, don't boo yet; wait till this gets interesting. We had every little idea on what was planned for the day; I thought its going to be a regular day with bug fixes, extending functionalities and boring documentation. After mails and sync ups we got prepared for the regular work, then our business heads called for the conference that was intimated thru mail the previous day; I got excited as the conference was to be followed by free lunch, though I was partially dreadful as the lunch can every well come from Suprabha, specialist in making food poi...

Because Talking to Human is too mainstream

Ever thought of talking to a bot? I had and I did try. http://www.cleverbot.com/ is the site, they also have apps but I was content with website. Had two little chats not that curious still not bad. Here my words in black and clever bot's in blue Hello there Artificial Intelligence. Some humans are Artificial Intelligence.  What? Humans are hardwired to think! we are intelligent by birth. I don't really understand the concept of artificial intelligence very well. You are made with but you don't understand? Well yeah neither I know about my anatomy. Touche, but do not change the issue of not knowing who is goku :E You watch cartoons? Sometimes. Whats your favorite? Favorite what? Favorite cartoon, we were talking about cartoons ... what confused you? I don't know. You are not that clever... lets says your next version will be better. That's ok. Nice talking to you. Byt. Good bye. Seems a good bot isn't it? Its able to identify the spelling mis...

Hey there 2014

Little that I knew, the year had so much for me. Soon after downgrading myself from bachelor, unintentionally I raised my responsibility as family man. To put it in plain text I thought getting married was not a big deal, since we have decided to continue living the same way with a small change that we are gonna share same room. How wrong was I? Very wrong, as a pointer my wife delivered a boy baby last month.  I believe I picked a wrong tone to announce that. I'm a Dad now!!! ...and that I'm a responsible family man I started to plan future for my son, Sarveshwaran. Of course I don't want to be the stereotyped Indian parent pushing their child to choose a career of their liking instead of their offspring's. The best example to explain the worst effect of such attitude is Rahul Gandhi, forced into politics (if rumors are rit) brings down the legacy of party with single 'empowering' interview, I don't want that to happen to my child. The world has b...

Mobile phone network providers can rob you in the name of SMS recharge

I could not stop with local calls analysis article when the SMS tariff was even crueler on us. Here I present you my findings on how easily a network operator robs you, sad part you don’t even know notice it. As I did in my last post I use my own network provider Airtel for the purpose of analysis, and I’m deeply sorry to them for exposing their meanest tariff policies. Straight away I give you all the SMS tariff plans available for Chennai customers from Airtel. Following table is a screenshot from their website. Link - https://pay.airtel.com/online-payments/prepaidResponse.do SMS recharge tariff as listed in Airtel website Now for the analysis part, here plans Rs.18, Rs.49 and Rs.92 are standard & straight forward, the actual amount you pay is equal to recharge amount. So what about the rest – Rs.26, Rs.36 & Rs.61? They are vampires feeding on your talk-time. Previously the content in the bracket was “1 st  SMS of day charged @ 49 Ps” and now they are goin...

Why you should choose tariff based on call log?

The article will analyze the tariff plans and tries to help end user find the best way to pick a plan. This will not be a discussion on why or how such charge is fixed but discussion will be on available plans. I’m going to use my network –Airtel for analysis so this will benefit me. To explain my model I’m going to further simplify by choosing only Prepaid- Local call rate cutters for Chennai circle for same period. Plan cost Tariff Period Rs.23 1p/sec 28 days Rs.46 40p/min 28 days Rs.69 35p/min 28 days Rs.85 30p/min 28 days Table 154.1 Local Calls Tariff Listing Naturally from this table you can see that the best plan is Rs.85 as it offers only 30 paisa per minute, while costly plan is Rs.23 as it’ll cost 60p per minute. But this interpretation seems very vague and this is what your network provider wants you to think – “The more you spend on cutter the more you save on talk tim...

Your MIND is the culprit

When a publication house you buy magazine from charges Rs. 150 & 50 as subscription fee for print & web edition respectively which kind of edition you’ll choose? What if they announce a ‘Festival offer’ as follows, which will you take? Which offer you prefer to use, for the yearly subscription. Print + Web edition slashed to Rs.100 Web edition slashed to Rs.30 Print edition slashed to Rs.100 When people were put on similar test result of analysis was that, after offer people never or rarely opted for “Only Print” while “Only Web” saw reduced count and “Print + Web” saw abnormal hike. I happen to read this on a trusted online content publisher like Business Insider or Guardian bad sadly gave up the link and source thinking this will not cross my life. When I saw my lunch-mate carrying a Coke in his hands almost full, I can’t control myself but ask few questions … So here goes the conversation, Shiva: So you like Coke Friend: Nah! it helps briyani digest (This ...

Forums and Logins

Forums and Q&A sites are IT guys main land, without them most would suffocate. These have always been the first step in analyzing, some do it literally! copy paste the error code even if it's by getting the business object exposed to outside world. An ordinary guy would copy the error message, google it, find multiple solutions in multiple sites and chooses what is easy to implement and if fixed done  its time to debug & fix the next error. This cycle is so established that it won’t ever change  wait did I mentioned ‘cycle’ is it so? ask yourself have you been just extracting information or have actively participated? Most are designed in such a way that all the contents are accessible to anyone but edits are not possible and hence we don’t care even to register until a time comes where we have ask a new question that wasn’t asked ever. Lets ask another question is signing up to any such Q&A site is advantageous? Yes! indeed yes given that yo...

Snakes in Dreams

A garden lizard runs from mango tree to coconut tree passing thru my way, as it passes its tail and hid legs evolve to resemble snake tail. As my mom watches this from behind grill door she is further taken away like my whole home as become a train leaving just me in my garden which is now expanding like a forest. Two gigantic nest of snakes arises from the ground and I draw my sword waiting for my first victim, sword where did it came from  The garden lizard comes back from behind with just its head like it and rest like snake and amazingly moving in straight line unlike snakes curved path motion. Without a warning I cut its head off but still the body drags self to one of the nest. A little shake in the ground then a bigger one. One snake bounces outta nest in vertical standing position it resembles more like the staff in the hand of enemy in last stage of Aladdin TV video game. I jump higher then it cutting it into countless pieces while I descend o.O it must have hurt. While...

Are we Social or E - Social

How many of us are ready to sit next to the unknown person in a bus? and how many of us ready to give  ‘like’  to cute photo posted by anyone on a social networking site? Obvious second question will out number first by 90% ok if you feel I’m tricking you like hedge fund analyst then try answering next question. Your friend works 2 floors above you, today is his birthday will you walk to wish him or send a (c)tweet or post a wish on wall or mail with mutual friends on cc?(in-case you are not going to get any treat) Very much a debatable topic, lets look deep into the word ‘Social’ and how it was regarded a decade back. Millennium saw new changes Globalization seed showed visible growth. People started to handshake with most people they met, in India caste and complexion difference got eradicated with the Gen X getting on top. Couple of decade back my mom was employed before marriage, she used to share her office experience at times where she met  her man and got marrie...

Writing blogs adds sense

Today Blogs are kicking in like mushrooms, flooding the internet domain. During college, I developed this habit of writing blogs started with silly named blogs like my dog hates a cat, susa360, Answer360(best, co-authored by my friends) and some more, roughly I have 5 years of blogging experience now. Now ScribbleShiva under Blogspot domain to write happenings on my life. When you scroll through the blog you would notice my mood shift, idiot-ism, intelligent-me... after reading you might feel you have just gained something be it a feeling like "its not a hot-girls diary anyway", "aww... I wasted my time" or "wow this guy does stuff" I have always requested the readers to leave some comment which many of you don't even care about 😕 I have never really minded how many read my blog how many likes it gets or does even anyone knows that I have a blog. But without forgetting I'd add my blog's address where ever possible, thankfully it has paid o...
